Historic charm, a beautiful brick downtown, and a strong sense of community.
What follows is my personal impression of Petaluma, blended with general facts about the area. Some of it is opinion. The only way to know if a place is right for you is to spend time in it. Please verify any specific detail (commute time, school assignment, amenity) directly with the appropriate source.
Petaluma sits at the southern edge of Sonoma County, along the Petaluma River. The historic commercial district downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places and contains some of the best examples of iron-front building architecture in the country. The city is closer to San Francisco than other parts of the county, which has long made it appealing to commuters.
Petaluma Boulevard's iron-front brick buildings have been carefully preserved. The Mystic Theatre, the Phoenix Theater, and McNear's anchor a downtown that's been a destination for decades.
The river still defines the city. The waterfront has been redeveloped with restaurants and shops, and the area connects walkers and cyclists to the broader downtown.
Petaluma's location at the southern edge of Sonoma County has historically made commute access to Marin and the Bay Area easier than other parts of the county. Actual times vary considerably by traffic, so always test the commute at your own peak times before deciding.
Petaluma is served by the Petaluma City Schools district along with several smaller districts in surrounding areas. School assignments depend on the property's address and can change. Verify directly with the relevant district before making any decision based on schools.
