Apple country with a creative, independent character, near the coast.
What follows is my personal impression of Sebastopol, blended with general facts about the area. Some of it is opinion. The only way to know if a place is right for you is to spend time in it. Please verify any specific detail (commute time, school assignment, amenity) directly with the appropriate source.
Sebastopol sits west of Santa Rosa, between the wine country and the Sonoma Coast. It's traditionally apple country, including the famous Gravenstein, and the orchards still shape the landscape outside town. Downtown has a distinctly bohemian, artistic feel that sets it apart from its neighbors.
The drive along the Gravenstein Highway in spring or fall is one of the great underrated Sonoma County experiences. Roadside stands, cider houses, and orchards stretch out in every direction.
A reclaimed industrial district just east of downtown, The Barlow houses winery tasting rooms, breweries, restaurants, art studios, and small makers. It's become one of the gathering points of the area.
Sebastopol is the closest of the Sonoma County wine country towns to the Pacific. The drive to Bodega Bay or the Sonoma Coast is a relatively quick scenic ride.
Sebastopol-area homes are typically served by the Sebastopol Union School District for elementary years and the West Sonoma County Union High School District for high school. Specific assignments depend on address and current boundaries, which can change. Confirm with the relevant district before relying on any school placement.
